NHL governors approve realignment: Winnipeg moves West, Detroit, Columbus head East
The new format, set for the 2013-2014 season, will feature two eight-team divisions in the Eastern Conference and two seven-team divisions in the West.
Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa are heading to what is temporarily billed as Division C in the Eastern Conference, along with Boston, Buffalo, Detroit, Florida and Tampa Bay.
Realignment will also create changes in determining the 16-team play-off field. The top three teams in each division will qualify for the post-season. The next two teams with the best records in each conference will earn wild-card berths.

WINNIPEG – The Winnipeg Jets are officially moving west in what NHL commissioner Gary Bettman calls a “fan friendly” realignment that was approved Thursday by the league’s board of governors.
